Even before the 16th century’s Protestant Reformation the issue of the Catholic Papacy was hotly contested. Arguably the most important issue dividing Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant understandings of Jesus’ mission is the Papacy. So what is the office of the Pope, the Roman Catholic Papacy? Do Catholics really believe that because the Pope is infallible he cannot sin? Or do they really think it believable that he can never make a mistake? Where in the Bible do Catholics see this thing they refer to as the “Papacy”? Besides, the word “Pope” is nowhere to be found in the Bible!
In this talk Andrew Wood will look at the Catholic Church’s teaching regarding the office of the Pope, the Roman Catholic Papacy. He will show you what it is, and, just as importantly, what it is not! You will see not only the importance of the Pope’s role for the life of the Church, but also for our ability to get to heaven. By going back into the Old Testament roots of the Papacy you will also see why Jesus instituted Saint Peter as the ‘Rock’ upon which he would build his Church (Mt 16:18), and why this office is indispensible for our personal relationship with Jesus.
A fascinating talk!
